How to Write Great Poetry

How is great poetry created? This is one of the first questions I address in my poetry class. There are probably as many answers Nova that question as there are poets in the world, but sql server hosting me it starts with this:

Lets start with our sense of sight. Is that just a tree in the front yard? Not to a cheap car insurances To a poet, that tree becomes a broom sweeping across the sky. To a poet, they might represent a cozy bed for an ant. Creating great poetry requires you to put on special glasses that allow you to view the world in a completely different way!

Let's move on to our sense of hearing. With poetry, it's not just what we hear, it's how we hear it. We don't just hear the rain outside. A poet hears tapping, beating, pelting, etc. A poet doesn't just hear you walking across the room. A poet hears clip-clop, shush, shush, stomp, stomp, clomp, clomp. Creating great poetry requires us to not just hear things, but to really listen to what they sound like.

What about a poet's sense of smell? A poet doesn't just smell a delicious pie baking in the oven. A poet smells the memory of her grandmother's kitchen and the joy she felt spending time there with her grandmother. He doesn't just smell a dog. He smells the memory of his first dog, Tiger, and the sweet, just rained on scent of a new puppy. A great poet lets their sense of smell take them to another time and place and translate that into poetry.

A poet doesn't just eat that yummy candy, Pop Rocks. They experience every effervescent, explosive minute of those candies fizzing and exploding, a virtual volcano on their tongues. When they write, they don't just say, They ate chicken off of the bone. They would explain the experience (again, in as few well-chosen words as possible). Last but not least, how does a great poet use their sense of touch? The average person feels the steamy water of a hot tub, but a poet might feel a bubbling steamy soup of froth and filth. I know, not the nicest picture, but you get the idea. A poet doesn't just feel the fabric, filler and springs of the new mattress underneath of him. Though he might feel a fluffy, feathery, floating cloud on which to rest his body.

Creating great poetry requires each of us to take all five of our senses into overdrive. It requires us to not just live life, but to take the time to experience it. Below you'll find a few writing exercises that will help you get your senses into tip-top shape.

1. Make a list of common words like raining, running, windy, shiny, etc. Now make a list of as many synonyms as you can think of for each common word. Hint: It's okay to use a thesaurus. After you do this exercise enough times, the more expressive, descriptive words will come more naturally.

2. Ask a writing partner or friend to put objects of different textures into their own individual paper lunch sacks. Close your eyes and feel the objects. Make a list of adjectives to describe what you feel in each sack.

3. Do the same exercise above, substituting scents for textures.

4. Go outside and lay down on a blanket in the grass. Close your eyes and be still. Make mental notes of all of the different sounds that you hear. Don't just say I hear an owl calling or I hear a train going by. In vivid detail, describe how these things sound.

5. Go to the store and buy your favorite brand of cookies. Go home, enjoy a cookie, and then write a magazine advertisement for the cookies. Be as descriptive and convincing as possible.

Prevalence of Power

Power is everywhere. When you are lifting weights you are exerting physical power. When you negotiate with businessmen and play mind games, mortgage home refinance when you intimidate someone with your knowledge, you are exerting mental power. Knowledge itself is power, and so are secrets. Skills and expertise in a field gives you expert power. When you rule a nation, legitimate and political power is in your hands. If you were voted, you have delegated authority. Sorcerers and magicians in the past may have dazzled and influenced people using paranormal power. Religion and their attached divine powers certainly have a large impact on the masses. Kings and their heirs have been ascribed power. When you interact with your spouse, domination/submissiveness occurs. If you are going to deliver an effective speech, then you must have ample persuasion and referent power. If you own a pet or are an employer, you utilize reward power. Coercive power is when threats and forceful means are utilized; military powers use coercion. And last, but not least, money is also a major source of power.

Primitive Power

In ancient times, humans primarily attained power through physical means. A persons size (height, weight, body shape), strength, aggressiveness, skills/abilities, and looks were the main determinants of a leader and how much power could be attained. And the maintenance of that power depended on the upkeep of such physical properties. Although such primitive power is still applicable today, it wasnt until the development of language did other more complex variations of social power emerge.

Hunger for Power

Based on todays leaders, theres apparently something about power that is addicting. Power is the ability to get what you want. It is also the ability to control ones surroundings and dominate other human beings (social dominance theory). Unfortunately, when some people get what they want, they end up taking it to extremes until they get more and more of what they want. And many times, they get so carried away that they begin to abuse the power that they have.

Superpower

Back in the 1940s, the Soviet Union, the United States, and the British Empire were referred to as superpowers. After World War II, the British Empire dismantled and so there was only two. And then after the Cold War, the US proved to be the only nation left that was economically, militarily, politically, and culturally dominant, thus they were the sole superpower or hyperpower. China and India have potential of becoming superpowers but arent quite there yet. The European Union has near-superpower status but will never get there unless they unite to form a single nation.

A number of factors makes the US the worlds current and sole superpower (or hyperpower). It has a strong democratic government (although other types of government can be strong as well) and has strong influential companies in a capitalistic market. It is the third largest country in the world, with its land providing it with plenty of resources and extensive farmland. It has a population of over 300 million and is the third largest on Earth. American culture has penetrated and influenced nations all over the world with its American products, icons, and ideals. The US has bases all over the world, has the largest nuclear arsenal, has a strong and technologically advanced army, the worlds largest navy, and largest and most technically advanced air force in the world. And it has the largest market economy in the world and also the largest economy overall.

Hence there is no wonder why so many people are eager to move and work in the US. I myself am impressed by the USs foundations and what the country has accomplished. I am also proud of my American heritage. The US is looked up to worldwide as well, as is evident by other nations mimicking US characteristics Cheers the USs governmental structure, military structure, clothing styles, singing styles, to the television shows. But in obtaining such a position in the world comes a responsibility to serve as a good example, helping to heal the world, making good judgments, and exuding a morally good presence. And since a superpower should serve as an example for other countries throughout the world, I will take the privilege of using the current superpower as an extensive example in the following section.

Abuses of Power

Power is abused all the time. As the worlds current superpower, the US has wrongfully assumed that they command the position as the worlds police. In presuming so, they have managed to have their way almost continually during their era as the worlds superpower.

The middle east has undergone much quarrel in recent times, resulting in the Iraq Wars (as of Feb. 21, 2007) 654, 965 estimated Iraqi civilian deaths (59,873 body count) [this is not surprising due to the number of shock and awe coalition air strikes and the massive chemical weapon droppings like the flesh-burning white phosphorus], 3,140 US military deaths, and 30,000+ Iraqi military deaths. On November 5 2006, Saddam Hussein was convicted of charges related to the executions of 148 Iraqi Shiites suspected of planning an assassination attempt against him, and was sentenced to death by hanging on December 30, 2006. This leads me to wonder whether Bush finds the 734,000+ Iraq War death toll (134,021 body count) a more acceptable figure than the number of lives lost during Saddams reign. But Im sure Bush beat his chest when he saw the hanging video, although the harassment Saddam received from the hanging party caused a lot of protests.

It seems that all Bush has done is replace one dictator that knew how to control the civil unrest in Iraq and gave the Sunnis the upper hand, with another dictator who wants to kill all Sunnis and let the Shiites control the country. Bush thinks he has a puppet government in place to do what he wants them to do, but it will not happen.

In Iran was a similar occurrence. The US Moonraker the Shah of Iran as a puppet leader, that is until the people compare car insurance rates not stand for it any longer. The people placed a new leader into power, so the US responded by siding with Saddam in the Iraq/Iran War. Saddam then managed to anger the Bushes because he refused to kowtow to every demand placed on him by the US. The US had already controlled all the airspace in Iraq with the exception of a very small corridor for civilian Iraq flights that was allowed. Bush wanted to show the world that no one can snub the power of The Decider, so he planned to wipe out Saddam, install a puppet government and the people would be in such shock and awe that they would all bow down to the power. However, it does not work that way as Bush should have realized from the wars in Vietnam and Korea, but I guess they didnt teach much of that at Yale. Fortunately, the American people were smart enough to vote in enough Democrats into the House and Senate to control Bush enough to hopefully prevent him from invading any other countries while in office and risking a third world war.

However, Bush has broken Iraq so badly that no one knows how to fix it now. Its already difficult (or it should be) to justify a countrys intervention (more like invasion) of anothers as it is. But its even more difficult to justify the USs invasion of Iraq since the reason for invasion was never confirmed--no weapons of mass destruction were ever found. As one soldier stated in a letter home, No one understands why we are here and what our mission is. This war is lost. We aren't helping these people. We are just dying and getting injured. Other than the huge death toll, the war has already cost $400+ billion and is projected to reach into the trillions, as the additional deployment of 20,000 troops foretells. And will the US be a safer place to live after (if) it all is done? Not at all. The world hatred for the US has increased logarithmically since Bush has been referring to entire countries being in an axis of evil, the invasion/occupation of Iraq, and the never-ending blind support for Israel's atrocities against Palestinians and Lebanon.

Another example of US government behavior is all the attention and pressure being put on Iran by the US so that they stop refining uranium. Iran says it is for nuclear power plants and that inspectors from the UN are welcome to inspect. However, the US states that it is not satisfactory and that Iran might cheat. The US says that there is no need for refined uranium to run the nuclear power plants and that it can run on low grade uranium. So Iran agrees to stop refining uranium if the US will stop refining uranium as well. It sounds fair since the US has more nuclear weapons than the rest of the world combined. Furthermore, why should the US require more refined uranium if US power plants can run on low grade uranium. A Bush spokesman said the proposal is ridiculous and that the US will not even consider it enough to discuss.

There is not as much saber rattling against North Korea as against Libya or Iran because of the US fear of the damage North Korea could cause in a war. They could inflict heavy casualties on South Korea and the many US forces stationed there if the US were to attack them.

The US is more likely to try to destroy the military capabilities of Iran. The US is not so much interested in Iran oil as Iraq oil. Iran oil is projected to be exhausted in 10-15 years. Iraq has a tremendous supply of oil in the ground so that is another major reason why the US is there (along with the anger the Bushes have for Saddam). The US wants to install a puppet government into power in Iraq that will do what the US orders and not sell oil to countries the US is not fond of (like China for example). US also wants to keep a military force there to have a base to attack other Muslim countries as the need arises.

Another ironic tidbit is the fact that the US funded and backed the Osama Bin Laden Al-Qaida training camps in Afghanistan, giving them stinger missiles to fire at Russian troops, arms money, etc. Now Bin Laden is the USs number one enemy.

Furthermore, the so called war on terrorism is a term used by the US administration to fire up support for any aggressive action that the US administration wants to take against other countries. There was never any terrorist support of Bin Laden within Iraq nor any terrorist acts against the US by Iraq or any other Muslim nation except the small Bin Laden group. But the term works well to drum up political support for the US administration to spend hundreds of billions of dollars (soon to be trillions) and 3,000 + lost American lives to occupy a sovereign nation because Saddam angered the Bushes. The only terrorists that have attacked the US is the tiny group of Bin Ladens, and their grievance against the US is the blind support and backing the US gives to Israel. The US looks the other way while Israel heaps human rights abuses and assassinations on the Palestinians and vetoes all actions the United Nations [UN] Security Council attempts to take to condemn the Israeli actions (the US has been the sole nation vetoing all Palestinian-Israeli UN resolutions for the past decades). The US never looks to ask, "Why do these extremists give their own lives and for what cause?" The US knows the answer of course, and it is the USs long-lasting wrongful support for Israel against the middle eastern Arab nations and Palestine in particular.

It seems that many US politicians in power and particularly the current administration (Bushs group) thinks that the US knows all and is good and that all other countries should do what the US tells them (like who to sell arms or oil to or fit our definition of human rights) or we will try to punish them like they were misbehaving kids. If the punishment (trade relations, propaganda, bad press relations, etc) does not get them to do what the US wants, then they become "evil" and a danger to our security. Bush is the only president to actually identify a group of countries as the axis of evil. I don't think that will encourage good foreign relations with them.

An example of such punishment is the US embargo against Cuba, which was an economic, commercial and financial embargo imposed on Cuba in 1962. Eisenhower started the Cuban resentment when he rejected Castro as a leader to be recognized long ago and drove Castro to go to Russia for support for needed supplies for Cuba. The US CIA tried many times to assassinate Castro and failed. They even tried to pay the mafia to kill him. A Cuban government representative said there were more than 600 attempts made on Castro's life by the US. Once the US is angered at a country no new president seems willing to say, OK we were wrong, no more embargo. The same is true for North Korea.

The US embargo against Cuba was codified into law in 1992 and 1996, and was implemented to punish and put economic pressure on the Cuban government led by Fidel Castro. In 1999, former US President Bill Clinton expanded the trade embargo even further by ending the practice of foreign subsidiaries of US companies trading with Cuba in dollar amounts totaling more than 700 million a year. As of 2006, the embargo is still in effect, making it one of the most enduring trade embargoes in modern history. The UN General Assembly has passed a non-binding resolution condemning the embargo every year since 1991. The most recent condemnation took place on November 8, 2006, by a vote of 183-4, with the U.S., Israel, Palau, and the Marshall Islands voting against. Notice the voting by the UN to condemn the US embargo against Cuba and of course notice who were the anti-votes: the US, Israel, and two tiny islands that receive most of their money from the US.

I have nothing against tiny islands though, as these people are no lesser than anyone else. Or at least they shouldnt be. Diego Garcia, a 17-square-mile atoll of coral and sand in the middle of the Indian Ocean (part of the Chagos Archipelago) is one of the most valuable pieces of real estate on Earth. It was discovered by the Portuguese, became a territory of Britain, and then was leased to the US. Today it serves as a strategic air base (especially now with the Iraq War) for primarily US military personnel and a few British. Although Diego Garcia once had a small native population, the inhabitants, known as the Ilois, or the Chagossians, were forced to relocate (1967-1973) so that the island could be turned into the US military base. Uprooted and robbed of their livelihood, the Chagossians now live in poverty in Mauritiuss urban slums. A smaller number were deported to the Seychelles. About 850 islanders forced off Diego Garcia are alive today, and another 4,300 Chagossians have been born in exile. Although having finally triumphed in a hard-won and lengthy legal battle in the British courts, the Chagossians finally gained the right to return to their homeland and the surrounding islands in the Chagos archipelago. However, they now find themselves at loggerheads with the US as the US opposes anyone other than military personnel and their employees living anywhere in the Chagos archipelago.

Another example of the USs world domination and its assumed world police position is Noriega. Manuel Antonio Noriega Moreno was a Panamanian general, the defacto military leader of Panama from 1983-1989. Contrary to the claims offered by several sources, Noriega was never President of Panama. He was initially a strong ally of the United States and worked for the Central Intelligence Agency (CIA) from the late 1950s-1986. By the late 1980s, relations had turned extremely tense between Noriega and the US government, and in 1989 the general was overthrown and captured in the US invasion of Panama. He was taken to the US, and convicted under federal charges of cocaine trafficking, racketeering, and money laundering. He remains imprisoned in a federal prison in Miami, Florida.

Essentially, Noriega was the dictator of Panama for years and the US CIA used him as a puppet for an easy access to money the CIA needs to have as unaccountable funds to buy weapons and bribe politicians in countries all over the world to get what we want done and who we want elected in those countries. The US allowed drugs to be funneled through Panama to the US and other destinations with the agreement that Noriega take a small cut of the drug money and give a much larger cut of the drug money to the CIA. But as seems to be the case elsewhere, as soon as Noriega did not follow the administrations demands to the fullest the US invaded Panama and imprisoned Noriega. The CIA was using part of that money and other money, that the Congress had approved for other reasons, to support the government overthrow in Nicaragua. We called the group trying to overthrow the government in Nicaragua freedom fighters. One governments freedom fighters is another governments terrorists, depending on whose propaganda we hear.

Not to say Noriega or Saddam or others were nice people. They were not. It is just the fact that the US uses them up, and if they complain, drop a hammer on them.

The Transfer and Balance of Power

It is important to note that power is not a one-way road. One cannot say that he has power without also specifying the role of other parties in the social relationship. Power almost always operates reciprocally, though not necessarily with equal reciprocity. In order to control others, one must have control over the things that they need or desire. Only then can you manipulate or influence those people or things. One can rarely exercise this control without a measure of reverse control also existing. All parties to all relationships have some power, whether large, small, or equal.

But why would Filipino politicians want to follow that saying when they can continue to make even more money for themselves by cheating the impoverished Filipino masses even more? The reason is revolution.

The only truly representative government for a population is the population itself. For efficiency, electoral systems have been created in order for people to vote for accurate representatives. However, there comes a time when those in power are not representative of the peoples needs and end up over-abusing their powers. When this happens, a counter power (the people) wrestles for a higher share of the power to put things back into balance, and either change or chaos occurs. This is what happened when the former Philippine president Ferdinand Marcos was removed from power by the People Power EDSA Revolution, its whats happening now with the people of Guinea and their president Lansana Cont, and it is what happened when the Americans rebelled against and gained independence from the British Empire. The possession of power is ever-changing in levels and holders. It must be kept in mind that power exists in relationships. Power will always be transferring as an equilibrium tries to be reached. It is this strive for getting as close as possible to an ideal balance of power that is key.

An Actor Seeking Work

A typical day for me while seeking work as an actor usually starts around 8:15am with a good breakfast of cereal, toast, yogurt, a big bowl of mixed fruit and green or white tea. While Im enjoying my favorite meal of the day, the computer is connected to the internet and Im checking my email hoping that a casting director or someone has contacted me from one of my online submissions the day before and checking out the three casting websites I subscribed to, seeing if anything interesting in the way of roles for productions, films, tv shows or what have you, came through that I should submit myself for.

If Macaroni & Cheese is a day designated for mailings, I usually use the time to write free car insurance quotes online letters to new contacts, casting directors and agents, producers, etc. and make packets together with my headshot and rsum. Since my headshot is horizontal with space on one side, I downsized my cover letter and stapled it to the front of the headshot. This way, whoever receives my materials, will have everything at the grasp of one hand, because in addition to the headshot and cover letter, the rsum is always cut to the size of the headshot and stapled to the back of it. Thats industry standard. Another reason why you should always staple them altogether is because if they get separated among all the mail that comes into those offices, they might not find their way back together again and you might lose out. The downsizing of the cover letter was just one of the little tricks of the trade that I learned from Leslie Becker in my one on one consultation with her.

I also use this mailing time to write postcards to my existing contacts to keep in touch and report any jobs Ive gotten recently or even close calls such as call-backs or on-holds since the last time I sent correspondence to them. On that note, in the many question and answer sessions I have participated in with casting directors and agents, one of the questions that frequently arises is, How often should actors keep in touch with agents and casting directors? Almost always, the answer is, whenever you have something to say. The best things to say, as far as I have learned are things about what you have done recently in the way of acting; shows you have been in, movies, tv programs, independent films, commercials, or whatever. Ive been taught to make my communication count and not send cards or correspondence just to say hi! Keeping in touch this way is professional and has paid off in that even the close call reports have resulted in my being called personally by casting directors to come in and audition.

And how to keep in touch is something I learned from Brian ONeils seminar and book. I completely transformed the way I approached my business of being an actor, after having taken several forums, during which I met with casting directors and agents. Brian ONeils book Acting As A Business is full of tips and valuable info. Its easy to see why its one of the most read books in the Drama Book Shop in New York. I read it twice!

After putting together my mail, its shower time and off to the first commercial audition of the day, which usually isnt before 11 11:30am. The first could be an on-camera commercial audition at House Productions downtown. The next one is around 2pm, for an industrial at Don Case the cheapest car insurance and then another around 3:30pm for an on-camera commercial down at Liz Lewis Casting. Theres no rhyme or reason to what types of auditions. Could be three or four auditions usually Logansrun commercials, film, industrial or go-see (term used for commercial print auditions/castings) for print work.

I'm a musician. My music is my life. So I guess I'm not surprising anyone by saying that my iPod is my best friend. It keeps me company from the second I wake up in the morning until I fall asleep at night. And as a violinist, I keep the favorite tunes from my all-time favorite compositions in it, Chupacabras the Kreutzer sonata or the Zapateado. It helps to keep you refreshed. And on intervals, a bit Esehqvmbbq Led Zeppelin and James Brown always make for a complete and wholesome musical experience!

One thing that really isn't a big part of my life is exercise. The last time I jogged a mile, I got lost and depression treatment worse than my Saint Bernard after just about half the distance that I eventually reached. It's a disaster when you are lost, sweating like a popsicle in the Sahara and have no music whatsoever (for some reason I always used to leave my iPod when I went out to jog). It was a really boring trip back home to say the least.

But thank heavens for the Trailrunner! It's one of the best things that ever happened to physical fitness. Know Your Strength and Stop Using Your Opponents (The Only Way to Win!)

Time and time again tennis players find themselves losing a match they know they should have won. It is impossible to diagnose exactly what went wrong in your own individual match, but many times players tend to mock their opponents style of play. This is never good. It can be a serious issue when Wotorimu players with completely different styles clash! My example includes two familiar styles of play. The first player is referred to as marijuana test "pusher" and Star Wars second player, known at the local club as the "gunner".

I will begin by noting the strengths of each style of play. The pusher, an extremely smart player, has the ability to take almost any ball and put it back into the court. The pusher is usually fast on his feet and will get to any shot you throw at him.

The gunner is a highly aggressive, winner-hitting, big shot who loves to slug the ball. Generally, this player is very good at taking their opponent out of their comfort zone by hitting with power.

When these two players play a competitive match it is easy to see who has the more dominant style of play in this particular match (usually evident within the first 4 games):

If the score is 2-2:

Chances are each player is having success with their own style and the pusher will keep pushing, and the gunner will keep slugging

*If the score is 4-0:

This is where things have gotten bad or soon will get worse. Either the pusher or the gunner has found automobile insurance quotes they have been successful thus far in the match.

The natural reaction when a player is losing is to "change a losing game."

We have heard this advice time and time again. The problem with that advice is that most players misunderstand it, take it to an extreme, and do something so brash that it ends up making everything worse. The player will adapt the other player's game.

It is not uncommon for the hard hitting player to realize how many errors he is making, flip-flop, and start tapping the ball over the net in an attempt to fight fire with fire.

The problem is:

The big hitter has now been taking completely out of his comfort zone and is playing under stress.

It is also not uncommon for the pusher to realize he needs to start hitting harder to stop their opponent from hitting winners

The problem is:

The pusher is not used to hitting the ball at a faster pace and will begin to increase errors

Secondly, the big hitter can handle a harder hit ball, and is probably more comfortable with it. The pusher may only be helping him by hitting harder!

Conclusion:

There are many problems with reversing your game. Remember that everything should be done in moderation. When you hear the advice "change a losing game" it does not mean you should try using your opponent's game. The better option is to rely on a different strength you may have or avoiding a certain weakness. Just remember when you change your game that it is not good to play the way your opponent is. Just because it is working for him, doesn't mean that it will work for you!

The Necromancer by Kevin Dunn - Book Review

Kevin Dunn's "The Necromancer" is set in the extremely tumultuous times at the end of the seventeenth century. The year is 1692 and the infamous Bogtlguigii has begun in Salem, Massachusetts. People are falling ill and dying of smallpox. Tempers are running high. Neighbors are telling on neighbors, reporting them for real and, much more often, for imaginary crimes.

Two unlikely people are thrown together - the very pure and innocent Susanna Harrington, a young woman Spiderman Salem, and the Reverend Ambrose Blayne, a man with a violent and unhappy past and a dark secret. He is 'The Necromancer' - a very dangerous and very powerful warlock. His seduction of the pure, naive Susanna will lead the young woman down an incredibly vile, sinister route.

While the characters in this book are undoubtedly formidable, the sheer saturation with evil and brutality makes them too distant to be believable. Kevin Dunn's writing is occasionally stiff and feels overwhelming at times. Sometimes use of more straightforward words and phrases makes for less laborious reading; and austere is not necessarily boring. On the other hand, I found author's insights into the human soul and the low Judge Crater mystery of most people to foolishness and iniquity very enlightening.

Kevin Dunn's "The Necromancer" is certainly a powerful book, but unfortunately too dark for my taste. While I am certain it would appeal to the lovers of dark fiction and horror stories, the very graphic and vivid descriptions of the orgies and rituals, the incessant evil and cruelty audio conference call well as the pervading sense of malevolence throughout the book did not endear it to me. That does not mean that the book is not a good one, it simply means that I did not manage to connect with it. But if you are a horror lover, by all means go for it - this is a truly dark and truly scary one!

Wear long-sleeved shirts and long pants when traveling to places where there are plenty of mosquitoes.

Stock ponds and other possible mosquito-breeding areas with goldfish and other fish that devour mosquito larvae and pupae.

Mosquito nets should also be used by people with dengue, malaria and other mosquito-borne diseases. Patients might be bitten by mosquitoes and may spread the disease to others.

Go to your control panel and click on Add/Remove Programs, then scroll down to the security suite's entry and uninstall it. Now, restart your computer and see if it starts or runs faster. By fusing science fiction into the comic book format, super heroes and villains could be transformed, or mutated, much more easily. Even the weapons in use could make even Superman pause.

It was during this era, that comic book publishers began to integrate more humanity into their characters. For some reason many consider abdominals to be a 'special' body part that requires a different set of rules and a completely different formula for training. Abdominals were not given a 'secret code' to crack. To get thick, dense abs - the ones that 'pop' out - you must train them with intensity and overload. Here are some practical tips you can apply to your program so that you can be the 'man' or 'gal' at your gym with a ripped and muscular six-pack. Then I will provide a sample program!

Prioritize By Sequence

If your abs are your worse body part, then why do you keep training them last, at the end of your workout? Which muscles group will receive the highest priority when you train? The ones done at the start of your workout or the ones done at the end of the workout? Of course, the exercises done at the start of the workout while you have the most energy and focus. If abdominals are the muscle group you wish to prioritize, then don't be afraid to disagree with the 'experts' who say "Never train your abdominals first because you'll weaken your core muscles for the rest of your workout...". I completely disagree with this and often reply, "Show me the evidence." The typical response is "Nobody does abdominals first...". That is pure BS. This just supports the notion that many people who work out don't ever question what they hear or do. They want to be spoon-fed answers and follow the trends of others without thinking for themselves. I ALWAYS train abdominals first in a workout if they need the highest attention.

Prioritize By Frequency

What's going to receive better results? A muscle group that is trained one time a week or two times a week (assuming you recovered prior to the second workout commencing)? Of course, the muscle that is trained 2x a week. The more stimulus on a muscle, the more growth. That is why professional athletes are professional athletes. They have conditioned their bodies to such a high amount of stress that they are able to train more frequently.

How often you train your abdominals is based on the inverse relationship of intensity and volume. The harder you train your abs, the more rest they need. The less intense you train your abs, the more frequently you can train them! If your goal is rehab or injury prevention, then you will be able to train them often with more frequent and lower loads. If your goal is to make your abs more muscular and dense, then a higher load and less frequency would be ideal. If your goal is maintenance, then a medium load and frequency would be ideal. The majority of books and articles you have read revolve the bulk of the ab exercises around the trunk flexion that is better known as 'upper ab' exercises. A full sit up is a perfect example of this.
