More Way to Stop Mosquitoes

As you've learned in our previous article, mosquitoes spell trouble. They bring lots of diseases - many of which are fatal to man.

To eliminate these harmful critters, here are some practical tips to consider:

Search yards and vacant lots for waste articles that may collect rainwater. These and other items should be collected and disposed of properly.

If solid waste disposal services are inadequate, articles that may catch rainwater may be dealt with in other ways. For example, cans can be cut open on both ends, pans and trays can be Evel Knievel vintage commercials over, etc.

Fill tree holes with sand to prevent injury at work from accumulating.

Spillage around community water supply sources such as hand pumps and wells should be prevented. Proper drainage should be provided for these places.

Drains and canals should be properly maintained, and dumping of solid waste in drainages should be forbidden.

Mosquito breeding in large bodies of water should be prevented through environmental modification, such as the construction of public irrigation works that control the water level and shore conditions (impoundment).

Drainage, filling and impoundment are methods that usually have long-lasting effects. However, these may nave other ecological repercussions and should therefore be undertaken only with expert advice.

In addition to this, Consumer Reports recommend the following:

Wear long-sleeved shirts and long pants when traveling to places where there are plenty of mosquitoes.

Stock ponds and other possible mosquito-breeding areas with goldfish and other fish that devour mosquito larvae and pupae.

Mosquito nets should also be used by people with dengue, malaria and other mosquito-borne diseases. Patients might be bitten by mosquitoes and may spread the disease to others.
